Back In The Swing of Things

Two years ago I injured my back playing golf. For the next year or so, I would often feel dull pain in my back throughout the day and night and sharp pain and spasms when I made a golf swing. Since the sharp pain only happened when I golfed, I decided that golf was off limits and that I would simply quit playing.  Thank goodness, a friend of mine referred me to Erin.  

I started physical therapy sessions one year ago. Erin is someone who can completely put you at ease and at the same time assess and diagnose the problem quickly. Before I left my first one hour session, she had determined that the core workouts I had been doing for decades had caused numerous problems.  She gave me a new core workout and stretching plan. This plan, by the way, was physically easier and took less time than my previous workouts. As the months progressed Erin had me add additional stretches, strength training and even breathing techniques. I followed her instructions and steadily my back improved.  

Last summer and fall I would go to the range and hit a few short irons at maybe 75% of full power, always leery of a setback. Erin apparently keeps great notes on my progress and concerns and although I was fearful of swinging the golf club, she encouraged me to do so, and of course she was right. The initial intention was always to get back to a place where I could play golf again. My last therapy session was a week ago and again Erin asked about me playing golf and I was still hesitant. She talked about how my back was in a much better and different place than it was a year ago and that I should give it a try.

This past weekend I went to the range and took more swings than I have in two years including hitting my driver. I was shocked that I didn't once feel any pain and even more surprised that the next day I was not sore, at all. 

As great as it is that Erin has gotten me to this place, let me tell you what is even better!  I don't have to take drugs that mask the problem, or consider surgery, or get manipulated in other ways, as MD's and Chiropractors would.
